Former SDL
Executive to Lead Innovative Optical Components Company
FREMONT, CA — 12/03/01 — Santur
Corp. has appointed Richard Craig as its Chief Executive
Officer. Dr. Craig has 20 years of experience in the optical
component industry, and a proven track record in taking
products to market.
Dr. Craig was an integral part of the management team
at SDL, which was acquired by JDS Uniphase; the deal,
initially valued at $41B, was the biggest transaction
in high-tech history at the time it was announced. Dr.
Craig led the first business unit at SDL, which became
a major supplier of optical components to companies like
Nortel and Lucent. During his tenure, SDL went from $6
million in annual revenue to over $200 million before
the merger. Most recently, he was the VP of the optical
amplifier and indium-phosphide pump unit.
"Santur has the right technology and vision to provide
tunable laser performance at the cost of conventional
lasers," said Dr. Craig. "In the short term,
this will allow cheaper planning and logistics for the
network. In the long run, this will enable agile networks
that can re-configure bandwidth delivery in real time.
This is a fantastic opportunity to supply the right solution
for our customers."
Christopher Rust, a partner with Sequoia Capital and director
of Santur, is enthusiastic about the appointment. "Rich
Craig is a proven leader in the very competitive world
of optical components, and brings to Santur the experienced
leadership to effectively guide Santur through the high-growth
period ahead," said Mr. Rust.
Prior to SDL, Dr. Craig worked on high-power lasers at
Hughes Research Laboratories. He obtained his Ph.D. from
UCLA in 1985 and holds several patents.
About Santur
Headquartered in Fremont, California, Santur provides
high-performance tunable lasers. These devices are used
to transmit data over fiber-optics networks, the infrastructure
of the Internet. Santurs initial product provides
the benefit of a tunable laser for the cost of a single-frequency
laser, improving the economics of delivering high bandwidth
for telecommunications companies. It is a high-powered,
widely-tunable distributed feedback (DFB)-like laser,
ideal for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks
in metro, long-haul, and submarine applications. Investors
in the privately-held company include Sequoia Capital
and Menlo Ventures. For further information, visit www.santurcorp.com.
