New
Product Line Delivers High-power, High-reliability Tuning
across C or L-Bands
ANAHEIM, CA, Optical Fiber Communications Conference
& Exhibit — March 19, 2002 —
Santur Corporation, a vertically integrated optical components
manufacturer, today announced the availability of the
new TL1010-C tunable laser, providing 10 milliwatts (mW)
of tunability across the entire C-band. The TL1010-C is
the first in a line of widely tunable laser products that
will debut this year utilizing Santurs patented
device and packaging technologies. These products set
a new standard with their unique combination of high-power
achieved without the use of a semiconductor optical amplifier
(SOA), wide tunability with no possibility of mode hops,
and stability in harsh environments. Santur has also sampled
its L-band and higher-power 20 mW module, both of which
will soon be commercially available. Key industry leaders
have received various sample versions of the Santur lasers
and have responded with great interest.
In combination with an external modulator, the TL1010-C
is ideally suited for use in a wide variety of dense wavelength
division multiplexing (DWDM) systems offered by network
providers. The wide tunability and favorable cost structure
enables flexibility in system design, lower inventory
costs, and streamlined logistics for network providers
of metro, long-haul, and submarine systems. Reliable,
low-cost, wide tunability as demonstrated in the Santur
product is also a key enabler for fully reconfigurable
networks.
"Service providers are actively looking for systems
that will allow them to build dynamic networks,"
said Brian Van Steen, Senior Analyst, RHK, Inc. "These
networks will allow service providers to rapidly respond
to dynamic provisioning and restoration requirements of
their customers. Santurs products will help fulfill
the needs of these next-generation networks."
RHK is a leading industry market research and consulting
firm specializing in the analysis of advanced technologies
for the global public telecommunications network.
"We are proud of the rapid progress we have demonstrated
since our founding in 2000," said Richard Craig,
CEO, Santur Corporation. "Our technological innovations,
product demonstrations, and customer feedback tell us
we are properly positioned for the next phase of design-ins
in optical networks. And we are pleased to offer the best
solution in a tunable laser product. We look forward to
the long-term relationships we see developing with our
customers."
All the desired features of a standard, high-performance,
fixed-wavelength DFB laser are provided in the TL1010-C,
with the additional features of 36nm wide tunability and
the functionality of variable optical attenuation (VOA)
in a compact, robust, industry-standard package. The simple
design of the patented DFB array and low-loss coupling
scheme enables pure DFB performance with an intrinsically
low cost structure approaching that of a fixed wavelength
device. Since the optical characteristics are identical
to fixed wavelength DFBs, no system redesigns or compromises
are necessary to make use of the tunable laser. The Telcordia-ready
package of the TL1010-C also integrates a wavelength locker
for ultra-stable 50 GHz ITU grid operation and built-in
control electronics for ease of use.
About Santur Corporation
Headquartered in Fremont, California, Santur Corporation
is a vertically integrated manufacturer of high-performance
tunable lasers. Santur was founded in November 2000 and
has gathered world-class expertise in the fields of optical
device design and packaging. Founders and employees include
individuals previously employed at companies such as SDL
(now JDS Uniphase), Nortel and AT&T, with decades
of combined experience in designing, manufacturing, and
managing high-reliability laser products for use in the
telecommunications industry. A completely configured clean
room with MOCVD capability, advanced lithography, and
thin-film tools is used to fabricate state-of-the-art
components. A custom packaging lab is tooled to carry
out the low-cost, automated packaging process. Investors
in the privately-held company include Sequoia Capital
(www.sequoiacap.com)
and Menlo Ventures (www.menloventures.com).
