Santur Corporation Announces 25 GHz Channel Spacing in Widely Tunable Transmission Laser Products
FREMONT, Calif. — May 30, 2002 — Santur Corporation, a vertically integrated optical components manufacturer, today announces the capability of 25Ghz channel spacing in its widely tunable laser products. This feature is now available for sampling in Santur’s TL1010-C product that provides 10 milliwatts (mW) of tunability across the C-band, and will be available in subsequent 20 mW and L-band products as well. The combination of 36 nm of tunability with 25 GHz channel spacings now allows access to 180 channels across the C-band to provide the high density channel count that service providers require.

"Much of the value of tunable lasers is in the quality of the stabilization over a range of wavelengths, enabling the tunable laser market to reach over $300 million by 2005," says Tom Hausken, director of optical communication components at Strategies Unlimited. "While several suppliers can stabilize their tunable lasers to 50 GHz spacings, Santur offers a laser suitable for emerging systems with 25 GHz spacings. Along with the wide tuning range and output power, this raises Santur's profile as a supplier." Strategies Unlimited is a leading market research and consulting firm specializing in the analysis of global markets for the optoelectronics, optical networks, RF/wireless, photovoltaics, and compound semiconductor industries.

"This is just one example of how we are responding to the needs of our customers, who indicate their requirement for dense channel spacing," said Richard Craig, CEO, Santur Corporation. "Our products are now even better suited for future-proofing their next generation systems." As before, all channels are accessed by simple software commands to the module, offering ease of use and high value to the customer.

Representatives from Santur will be available during SUPERCOMM 2002 for further discussion.

Santur’s industry debut occurred in March of this year at the 2002 Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) conference with the announcement of the TL1010-C. Santur products set a new standard with their unique combination of high-power achieved without the use of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), wide tunability with no possibility of mode hops, and stability in harsh environments. Santur has also sampled its L-band and higher-power 20 mW module, both of which will be commercially available. Key industry leaders have received various sample versions of the Santur lasers and have responded with great interest.

In combination with an external modulator, the TL1010-C is ideally suited for use in a wide variety of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems offered by network providers. The wide tunability and favorable cost structure enables flexibility in system design, lower inventory costs, and streamlined logistics for network providers of metro, long-haul, and submarine systems. Reliable, low-cost, wide tunability as demonstrated in the Santur product is also a key enabler for fully reconfigurable networks.

About Santur Corporation
Headquartered in Fremont, California, Santur Corporation is a vertically integrated manufacturer of high-performance tunable lasers. Santur was founded in November 2000 and has gathered world-class expertise in the fields of optical device design and packaging. Founders and employees include individuals previously employed at companies such as SDL (now JDS Uniphase), Nortel and AT&T, with decades of combined experience in designing, manufacturing, and managing high-reliability laser products for use in the telecommunications industry. A completely configured clean room with MOCVD capability, advanced lithography, and thin-film tools is used to fabricate state-of-the-art components. Santur’s packaging facility is tooled to carry out the low-cost, automated packaging process. Investors in the privately held company include Sequoia Capital (www.sequoiacap.com) and Menlo Ventures (www.menloventures.com).
