Corporation Boosts Widely Tunable Transmission Laser Power
to 20 mW |

New C-band
product delivers high power without an SOA
DALLAS, TX, National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference
– September 17, 2002 – Santur Corporation,
a vertically integrated optical components manufacturer,
today announced the availability of the new TL1020-C tunable
laser, providing 20 milliwatts (mW) of tunability across
the entire C-band. This offering doubles the power output
available in a widely tunable product since Santur’s
first announcement earlier this year, in order to meet
the increasing power needs of both metro and long haul
systems.
Santur’s products have set a new standard in the
industry with their unique combination of high-power achieved
without the use of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA),
wide tunability with no possibility of mode hops, stability
in harsh environments, and low cost. In addition to the
C-band products already announced, Santur has sampled
L-band versions of its products.
When combined with an external modulator, the TL10120-C
is ideally suited for use in a wide variety of wavelength
division multiplexing (WDM) systems offered by network
providers. The wide tunability and favorable cost structure
enables flexibility in system design, lower inventory
costs, and streamlined logistics for network providers
of metro and long-haul systems, and are proving economically
advantageous even in today’s difficult market environment.
“This new product reflects the need for higher output
powers in the marketplace, and our ability to develop
higher power in a short amount of time reflects the scalability
of our design,” commented Bardia Pezeshki, Santur’s
CTO and founder.
All the desired features of a standard, high-performance,
fixed-wavelength DFB laser are provided in the TL1020-C,
with the additional features of 36nm wide tunability and
the functionality of variable optical attenuation (VOA)
in a compact, robust form factor. The simple design of
the patented DFB array and low-loss coupling scheme enables
pure DFB performance with an intrinsically low cost structure
approaching that of a fixed wavelength device. Since the
optical characteristics are identical to fixed wavelength
DFBs, no system redesigns or compromises are necessary
to make use of the tunable laser. The Telcordia-ready
TL1020-C module also integrates a wavelength locker for
ultra-stable ITU grid operation down to 25GHz channel
spacing, and includes built-in control electronics and
software for simple interfacing.
About Santur Corporation
Headquartered in Fremont, California, Santur Corporation
is a vertically integrated manufacturer of high-performance
tunable lasers. Santur was founded in November 2000 and
has gathered world-class expertise in the fields of optical
device design and packaging. Founders and employees include
individuals previously employed at companies such as SDL
(now JDS Uniphase), Nortel and AT&T, with decades
of combined experience in designing, manufacturing, and
managing high-reliability laser products for use in the
telecommunications industry. A completely configured clean
room with MOCVD capability, advanced lithography, and
thin-film tools is used to fabricate state-of-the-art
components. A custom packaging lab is tooled to carry
out the low-cost, automated packaging process. Investors
in the privately-held company include Sequoia Capital
(www.sequoiacap.com),
Menlo Ventures (www.menloventures.com),
and Thomas Weisel Partners (www.tweisel.com).
