Tunable Transmitter Components

There are two types of tunable transmitter components that are available. The physical design of the component is the same. The difference between these tunable transmitters is in the design of the Mach-Zehnder modulator. There is a chirped version and a zero chirp version. The zero chirp version has higher OSNR performance and is generally more suitable for metro-core and long haul applications. Typical bit error rates for the zero chirp tunable transmitter are < 1 dB penalty for ± 1000 ps/nm at 10-12 error rate. The chirped version is designed for metro applications where there are not many concatenated amplifiers but there is a need for longer reach. Typical bit error rates for the chirped tunable transmitter are < 2 dB penalty for - 1600 ps/nm at 10-12 error rate.
